Chewing Gum Awareness Week

This summer, we hosted #ChewingGumAwarenessWeek where we explored the impact of chewing gum littering in our streets and how we can stop it.

This project involved the Junior Design Factory working through the design process to investigate what products could be injection molded from recycled chewing gum and how this object could promote chewing gum recycling. The best idea? Chewing Gum Soldiers.  These chewing gum soldiers were placed in a battle against the Chewing Gum on our streets in their 'Rescue and Recycle' mission.

It got a little messy painting all of the soldiers!

The Junior Design Team really got stuck in finding out about the problems chewing gum littering brings to the city.

The team found out that the government has to pay a shocking 150 million every year to clean up chewing gum waste from our streets.

The team found out that the government has to pay a shocking 150 million every year to clean up chewing gum waste from our streets.

The junior design team then went out to photograph the soldiers rescuing our streets from chewing gum in our miniature photography day where they learnt all about macro photography, photographic composition and were even brave enough to hand out our Chewing Gum Awareness flyers and our models to the general public so they could also get involved!

The team did an excellent job promoting Chewing Gum Awareness on their day out and the next day we were flooded by entries to our Chewing Gum Awareness photography challenge. They learnt a lot of design skills as well as marketing and interpersonal skills required to promote a social change campaign and can’t wait for next years Chewing Gum Awareness Week!

We were flooded with photography submissions!

Our resident vlogger Josh also had a lot of work on his hands putting together everything for his fantastic overview of our campaign!
