You need to:
Think about what makes a good leader.
Decide what leadership skills you would like to develop
Start thinking about an art or design project, or part of a project, that you could lead
Download the worksheet or the powerpoint template below to help you complete this section.
If you don’t have powerpoint you can open the template in google slides instead.
Leadership
What qualities do you think a good leader needs to have? Consider good examples you have experienced
Here are some ideas for what you could do:
Make a list of qualities (for example: being patient, kind, organised, supportive, good at listening).
Think about a teacher, coach, or group leader you admire. What makes them a good leader?
What leadership skills would you like to develop in your arts leadership project?
Here’s what you could do:
Think about what you’d like to get better at when leading (for example: speaking in front of a group, organising materials, helping others)
Next you need to think of an arts project where you could work as a leader
You don’t have to do the whole project by yourself!
You can work as part of a team or with helpers. The important part is that you take the lead in at least one part of the project.
This might mean:
Planning an activity and then asking others to help you run it
Leading one part of a bigger event (like explaining a warm-up activity or setting up a display of work)
Being in charge of one small group while someone else supports another group
Setting up the space for an event that someone else is running
Your leadership can be big or small - as long as you are in charge of something and show your skills!
Leadership
Describe your arts leadership project
What will you do?
You might want to:
Run a drawing workshop
Set up a mini exhibition of work
Lead a dance routine
Set up a space for an event
Demonstrate an activity before everyone else has a go
Lead a warm up task
Why did you choose it?
• Do you enjoy this activity?
• Is it something you are good at?
• Do you want to share your skills or teach others something new?
• Does it make you feel happy or confident?
What will the creative outcome be?
• What will be the final result?
• What will people see, hear, or experience at the end?
• Will there be a finished artwork, a performance, a display, or a completed event?
More Planning
What resources will you need?
List any materials, tools, or equipment you will need for your project.
Are there any health & safety considerations?
Think about where you will do it and what you will need to keep everyone safe.
Do you need to give safety instructions or check the space?
Do you need to make sure everyone knows how to use the materials properly?
What will your leadership role be? What will you be responsible for doing?
Describe exactly what you will be in charge of.
Will you plan the activities, lead the group, prepare materials, give instructions, or organise the space?
Explain what decisions you will make and what parts you will lead.
How will this help you develop leadership skills?
Explain how taking on this role will help you grow.
Will it help you feel more confident, improve how you work with others, or help you practise organising and leading a group?
Will you be working with other people? What will they be doing?
Tell us if you will have helpers or work as part of a team.
What jobs will they do?
How will your role be different from theirs?
Explain how you will all work together to make the project happen.
